Early Orthodontic Treatment

Monitoring Growing Smiles

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation between seven and eight years old. An orthodontic evaluation at this age will ensure that your child’s growth and development are on track, and it can help us determine if and when any treatment is needed. While most kids will be able to wait until they’re older to start treatment, if early orthodontic treatment is necessary, it can prevent more serious problems in the future. To learn more about early orthodontic treatment in Thornton, CO, or to schedule your child’s first orthodontic evaluation at our family-friendly practice, call Shine Orthodontics at 303-452-7777.

Why Age Seven?

By age seven, most children have their first permanent molars, which establish the back bite. At this time, Dr. Scheer is able to evaluate the growth and development of your child’s jaws and get an idea of how their smile is shaping up. As we said, the majority of children won’t require treatment this young. Dr. Scheer will simply monitor them over the years and let you know when it’s the ideal time to start treatment. However, when early orthodontics is indicated, we can intercept or prevent problems that may not be able to be fixed without surgery in the future.

When is Early Orthodontic Treatment Necessary?

At Shine Orthodontics, we always treat children conservatively. The most common reasons Dr. Scheer will recommend early orthodontic treatment are:

  • To correct crossbites, which can cause the jaws to grow asymmetrically
  • To make space for permanent teeth that will not come in on their own
  • To guide the growth and shape of the jawbones, which is known as dentofacial orthopedics
  • To reduce the need for corrective jaw surgery or tooth extractions down the road
