Why Age Seven?
By age seven, most children have their first permanent molars, which establish the back bite. At this time, Dr. Scheer is able to evaluate the growth and development of your child’s jaws and get an idea of how their smile is shaping up. As we said, the majority of children won’t require treatment this young. Dr. Scheer will simply monitor them over the years and let you know when it’s the ideal time to start treatment. However, when early orthodontics is indicated, we can intercept or prevent problems that may not be able to be fixed without surgery in the future.
When is Early Orthodontic Treatment Necessary?
At Shine Orthodontics, we always treat children conservatively. The most common reasons Dr. Scheer will recommend early orthodontic treatment are:
- To correct crossbites, which can cause the jaws to grow asymmetrically
- To make space for permanent teeth that will not come in on their own
- To guide the growth and shape of the jawbones, which is known as dentofacial orthopedics
- To reduce the need for corrective jaw surgery or tooth extractions down the road
