InBrace FAQ

How does InBrace work?

InBrace is a behind-the-teeth straightening solution consisting of low-profile, custom brackets and personalized Smartwires®. Since InBrace is bonded to the back of your teeth, on the tongue side, no one can see it all when you smile.
Using advanced computer modeling and AI algorithms, the Smartwires are programmed with Dr. Scheer’s tooth movements. They use gentle force to start shifting your teeth into their final positions from the first day of treatment.

The Smartwires feature a locking loop design to secure the wires to the brackets. This helps to move teeth with less friction and without the need for monthly tightenings. Thanks to the innovative design of InBrace and the precise, digital treatment planning, you may see your new smile sooner, and you’ll have fewer visits.

Who is a candidate for InBrace treatment?

InBrace treatment is effective for all types of malocclusion (bad bite), including excessive overbite, underbite, crowding, spacing, crossbite, open bite and overjet teeth. The precision of digital treatment planning combined with the efficiency of the custom Smartwires lets Dr. Scheer successfully address cases ranging from simple to complex. In fact, InBrace is more effective than clear aligners at correcting tooth rotations and tooth height, as well as closing gaps caused by extractions.

How long does InBrace treatment take?

The length of InBrace treatment depends on the severity of your case. In general, treatment averages between 6 and 18 months. The Smartwires eliminate a lot of the inefficiencies associated with conventional braces and are more effective at achieving complex tooth movements than aligners. This means you might be able to finish treatment sooner with InBrace than you would with other treatment options.

Does InBrace hurt?

While you’ll never feel significant InBrace pain during treatment, you may have minor discomfort when you first start. This just means your InBrace is working! Any aching will subside within a few days, and once you get used to your appliance, you’ll forget you’re wearing it. The Smartwires are programmed with Gentleforce™ technology, so they move teeth with less force and their loop design also eliminates friction. Overall, treatment is more comfortable.

Are there food restrictions with InBrace?

Coffee, red wine, you name it, you can drink all of your favorite drinks throughout treatment since there is no plastic that can stain.

That said, there are some foods to avoid with InBrace, including anything really hard, chewy, or sticky that could damage your appliance, such as nuts, pizza crust, gummy candy, taffy, and chewing gum. We promise, it will be well worth it when you see your new smile!

How do I care for my InBrace appliance?

A major benefit that our Thornton, CO InBrace patients love is that caring for the appliance is simple. Unlike conventional braces or lingual braces, InBrace’s looping Smartwires let you brush and floss as you normally would. You don’t need to mess with floss threaders or any complex tools.

Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your teeth after meals and snacks, and floss once daily. Since the brackets are bonded to the back of the teeth, if you do develop discoloration or white spots on the teeth, they won’t be visible when your InBrace comes off.

InBrace is mouthguard compatible too! So, be sure to keep your appliance and smile safe by wearing a mouthguard while playing sports. And, of course, stay away from really hard, chewy, or sticky foods that could cause damage.

Will InBrace affect my speech?

InBrace can affect your speech temporarily. Once you acclimate to your appliance in a week or two, your speech will return to normal. To speed up the process, talk as much as you can at the start of treatment (read aloud, sing along to your favorite songs, etc.)
